VANCOUVER – Ministers concluded a meeting in Vancouver hoping to increase Francophone immigration and address the decline of French across Canada.

The Council of Ministers of Francophone Canada representing the Francophone and Acadian communities met for two days, with the participation of representatives from the three levels of government.

Federal Official Languages Minister Jeannette Petitpas-Taylor said the ministers discussed immigration, support for vibrant Francophone communities and opportunities associated with the recently updated Official Languages Act and Plan of Action for Official Languages.

In a press release, the council said it was pleased to reach the target of 4.4% for Francophone immigration outside Quebec in 2022.

Many of the federal, provincial and regional meetings are often combative, but the Francophone assembly was very collaborative, says Adrian Dix, British Columbia’s minister in charge of Francophone affairs.

Next year’s government will be in Halifax.

“The topics of these meetings that we had this week were really topics of collaboration,” Petitpas-Taylor told a news conference.

The provinces, territories and the federal government work together with shared goals and priorities to protect and promote our French language.
