After several years of calm, Italy is once again facing a large wave of emigration. More than 51,000 migrants have arrived on the peninsula by sea since 1any January, compared to 20,000 over the same period in 2022 (+154%), according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). And the Italian coasts revived the horror of shipwrecks. On February 26, in Cotro, a seaside resort in Calabria, a sunken boat broke loose a few meters from the shore, causing the death of 94 migrants. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the first quarter of 2023 was the deadliest in the central Mediterranean since 2017, with at least 441 people losing their lives in transit.
Faced with this situation, Rome regularly criticizes its EU partners for their lack of solidarity. relations
