Text description provided by the architects. A 10 minute drive from Auroville International City, this weekend home provides the perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of Pondicherry and Auroville. La Petite Maison Rouge is designed to show off and maximize the surrounding context and the local French Indo architecture. It has been designed with the needs of our UK based clients in mind – a sophisticated residence that is both contemporary and earthy.

Architectural planning is dictated by two main factors – context and climate. In context, the red earth soil supports abundant horticulture, so the landscaping enhances the character of the site and the residents’ way of life. Also, this area does not offer outside views, so the views focus on the landscaping and interiors. From a climatic point of view, the hot and humid weather made us admire the traditional French architecture of the neighboring French city of Pondicherry. We considered the dilution of traditional Indian and French courtyard houses and distilled the Little Red House design. The house appears larger than it is due to its connection to the landscape and the efficiency of the design.

The main entrance to the house is from the yard. The L-shaped house is surrounded by a rectangular courtyard with all rooms facing the courtyard. This form provides openness to the living and entertainment areas and privacy to the bedrooms. The walls of the jali in the courtyard act as filters for the harsh sun and hot air in the height of summer. Separate side entrance leads to the pool and garden. The patio hosts small parties while the pool and lawn host large gatherings.

The interior and exterior decorations are designed to encourage lively conversations. A granite breakfast table with hanging chandelier provides a place for a quick breakfast and serves as an indoor bar table to encourage casual conversation. The large private pool has a swim up bar which can also be accessed from the lawn and this is the main feature of the house. The checkerboard-shaped entrance of the villa is intentionally sparse and draws the viewer’s attention to the greenery of the courtyard with the house as a backdrop. Ceilings and floors are muted so that the viewer focuses entirely on the living spaces, human interactions, and the surrounding nature.

The exposed adobe walls are inspired by the unique feature of the village – the red earth soil that supports agriculture and horticulture in the area. The bricks are of local origin. Waxed natural stacking stone is used for the floors. We firmly believe that this home leaves a lasting impression on the minds of visitors even after they leave. The home is simple yet beautiful in its own way, with features promoting art and vice versa.
