Sysco Corp. New attorneys appointed for antitrust lawsuit against major pork and beef manufacturers.
He said on Wednesday that Michael Calhoun of Baker Botts will now represent Cisco in the price-fixing lawsuits. filing in court. Proposed settlements in at least some of the cases have been delayed by a battle between the food retailer and litigation financier Burford Capital Ltd. which awarded Cisco $140 million to pursue its claims.
The firm parted ways with its original attorney, Scott Gant of Boise Schiller, after Burford was accused of collaborating with Gant in an effort to block settlements.
Burford won an arbitration award in New York in March that bars Cisco from finalizing settlements in price-fixing lawsuits, which the financier says are “extremely weak”. Sysco previously agreed to give Burford veto power over settlement talks — a power Burford says it doesn’t usually have — after Sysco breached the financing agreement by assigning some of its legal claims against the processors to customers.
Calhoun represented JSW Steel in an antitrust lawsuit against three national steel companies, which the company ultimately lost. He previously represented Liberty Media after the company was defrauded by a French entertainment group in a deal involving USA Networks that resulted in a $956 million bonus.
