France has a new all-time top scorer.

Olivier Giroud clinched the title with a late first-half goal in his country’s World Cup round of 16 match against Poland on Sunday. Kylian Mbappe passed a pass to Giroud, who turned and fired a left-footed shot past Polish goalkeeper Wojciech Czesiusny to open the scoring.

Giroud equalized the legendary Thierry Henry with two goals in France’s World Cup opener against Australia, earning the 51st point of his international career. He did not score in France’s last two Group D matches and found his way back to start the round of 16.

The goal in the 44th minute was Giroud’s second goal of the match. He had his first chance in the 29th minute but went past the left post after being crossed by Ousmane Dembele.

The 36-year-old striker made his senior international debut for France in 2011. He is now in his third World Cup final and has brought France closer to defending their title since 2018.
